What's Good Ya'll!!! Happy Black Pride and Black Music Month Ya'll!!! I introduced ya'll to Josiah wise a few reviews ago, so I thought it was befitting for this month to review the latest album from one of my favorite black, queer artists. This Wises' third studio album and it was met with great reviews, however, fromone Baltimorean to another, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! In previous works, you aren't quite sure how to receive Serpentwithfeet (SWF). The name alone throws you off and their appearance was even more startling, however it was his interfuse of gospel and melodic r&b that seeped through your soul and captivated you. Currently residing in LA, Josiah has been making a name for himsself in the music industry for a minute now. Working alongside artists like Orion Sun, Syd, Daniel Ceaser, Bjork, Mick Jenkins, Nao and more. His resume like his writing game is everything and with the release of this new album the sky truly is the limit for Wise.
I forget how much I love club music. I haven't lived in Baltimore since 2011. Baltimore Club music is a birthright lol so I was excited to hear the first single from the latest SWF album pay homage to Baltimore Club Music. 'Damn Gloves' Featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Yanga YaYa is the first song on the 'Grip' album and one of my favorite tracks. It is just a good time and fun to dance to! I hope more non queer artists within hip-hop start to collab with queer artists more. This song is a huge indication of what bops can come about when the worlds collide!
While 'Safe Word', the second track on the album, is the second single from 'Grip', it is the third track 'Spades' that gives me life!. Its a cute reminiscent bop that resonates so deeply cus ya girl can't play spades to save her life lol. I also loved the track 'Hummin' which gives a dope country/blues vibe and 'Ellipsis' and '1 to 10'. The album is only ten tracks long, 30 mins altogether and as soon as you get into the grove of the album, just like that it ends and makes you yearn for more.
What I truly regret is not catching him on tour when I had the chance. His last tour stop it Germany on Augiust 12th, I mean I could... but I have other travel plans that entire month however please do yourself a favorif you can catch Serpentwithfeet live, he is a must see! I would love to see how his stage presence has evolved along with his work. Make sure you check out the album and keep up with SWF on IG: https://www.instagram.com/serpentwithfeet/?hl=en
