What’s good y'all? HAPPY WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH!!! Grammy Award Winner Coco Jones is back with a new single! I’ve been a fan of Coco’s since her single 'Déja Vu', released in 2013. 2013 may have been the year I found her music but Coco has been doing this since 2006 when she competed on Radio Disney and became known for her song ‘Real You.’ In 2009 She performed on Maury during a “Most Talented Kids Episode.” And in 2011 she guest starred in Disney’s television series, '"So Random". So it’s very fair to say our girl Coco has been gearing up for this Grammy win for some time now, all her hard work has finally paid off but that doesn’t mean you slow down anytime soon. So with a new single and video to match let's get into why I like ‘Taste’ by Coco Jones.
Now as you can see I just said LIKE not LOVE. lol. I recently saw on Threads someone said that this song was corny because of the added Britney Spears sample. While I strongly disagree that it makes the song corny, I do not think its her best song nor do I think it truly showcases the powerhouse that is Coco Jones.
Don't get me wrong, I have added this song to my playlist and it will be in rotation so that I can learn the words lol. But, for me, it's a little bit too much on the autotune sound for such a strong vocalist like Coco, it's just feels unnecessary. Now if this is just the vision for the sound of the song to make it her own, seeing that she sampled such an iconic tune...then I get that. And here's the thing, I love that she sampled Britney Spears. While Coco Jones is an R&B girlie true and through, sampling and using iconic songs from other genres could assist in spreading your wings from being just a one genre artist. Not saying that's her goal, but quite often society will pigeon hole artists especially Black artists to one genre, the one they rode in on lol.
While I only like the song, I LOVE THE VIDEO! It was giving Aaliyah, Ashanti, Britney, TLC, Beyonce...I could go on! It's like one night Coco had this dream to study the template, perfect it and do it justice! She's a star in her own right, whether its a sampled tune or her own amazing bops, Coco is proving why she is apart of the future of musical artists here to stay!
