Dominic Fike and Tay-K Get Personal on “SPOTLIGHT / INNER CHILD”

Sometimes an album's most revealing moment isn't a hook or a verse. It's a conversation.
Dominic Fike closes his new album, HOW TO QUIT SMOKING, with “SPOTLIGHT / INNER CHILD,” a two-part track featuring an unexpected appearance from incarcerated Texas rapper Tay-K. Released October 30, 2026, the 15-song album arrives via Columbia Records, with the collaboration serving as its final track.
The song moves from a rock-driven opening into a quieter, guitar-led section. Near the end, a phone conversation between the artists turns toward childhood, difficult experiences and the possibility of personal growth.
“Stay connected to your inner child, bro,” Tay-K tells Fike, according to the publicity materials shared with LipsticknLyricsz. The exchange offers a more reflective moment than listeners might expect from a track featuring an artist best known for the viral 2017 hit “The Race.”
That moment, however, exists alongside a serious legal history. Tay-K, whose legal name is Taymor McIntyre, was convicted of murder in 2019 in connection with the killing of Ethan Walker during a 2016 home invasion. In April 2025, a Texas jury convicted him of murder in the 2017 killing of photographer Mark Anthony Saldivar. He received an 80-year sentence to run concurrently with his earlier 55-year sentence. His attorneys announced plans to appeal the 2025 conviction.
The distinction matters: a conversation about growth can be newsworthy without minimizing the lives lost or presenting reflection as proof of rehabilitation.
On Fike's album, the phone call serves a clear artistic purpose. HOW TO QUIT SMOKING explores change, habits and the uneasy work of growing older. Closing with an exchange about holding on to one's younger self adds another layer to those themes.
According to the press announcement, Tay-K is also preparing a new full-length project, his first since 2017's #SantanaWorld, with John Cunningham serving as co-executive producer. A specific release date has not been confirmed.
“SPOTLIGHT / INNER CHILD” is available now on Dominic Fike's HOW TO QUIT SMOKING. Whether listeners hear the closing conversation as moving, complicated or both, it is likely to spark discussion beyond the music itself.
