Kalisway - 'Unstoppable'
What’s Good Y’all?! I thought I had shared this new artist before, but it seemed to be just my imagination, or rather my desire to share a new sound from Toronto. When you think about artists from Canada, Drake and Justin Bieber instantly come to mind; however, there is a newer artist you should check out and add to your rotation.
I first discovered Kalisway back in 2024 with the release of their album 'A Kid From Toronto'. The big hair and chill demeanor on the album cover reminded me of something from the 80’s or early 90’s, so I had to click on the album and check it out for myself. I absolutely adored the sound of Kalisway, as it made me think of early New Edition. I thought it was interesting that her sound was being compared to the early 2000s. With her 2024 project, I didn’t hear those elements; however, with this new album, 'Unstoppable', it feels like a blast back to the era of Brandy’s Full Moon project.

'Unstoppable' is Kalisway's 5th studio album, written and produced by the Toronto native. And unlike past albums, this 12-song project features two guest appearances by other dope artists you may not have heard of before. Laya, an R&B singer from Staten Island, lays down her vocals on the track ‘I Like It ’, and Reuben Vincent is a soulful hip-hop rapper and producer from North Carolina who shines on his verse on the last track, ‘You and Me’.
Some of my favorite tracks consist of ‘Unstoppable’, ‘Rewind’, ‘Not So Sweet’, ‘I Like It’ feat. Laya and ‘You and Me’ feat. Reuben Vincent. My favorite thing about Kalisway is just how different she sounds within this generation of music. So many artists tend to fade into the background for me as the production and vocals blend and sound the same. But Kalisway carved out a lane for herself, blending genres and eras of music to produce a unique sound at a time when being distinctive is essential.
