What's Good Y'all!!!
Are you tapped into Laila!? If not no worries, I got you! This was my week to get into new music and I came across ‘Gap Year’ by Laila!. This is Laila!’s first studio album and you can just tell she is a 90’s baby through and through! There really isn’t too much out there yet about this new upcoming artist besides the fact that she is the daughter of MOS DEF. But of course as a new artist trying to pave your own way, that's not what you want to rely on you know? So I would love to take this opportunity to let my girl Laila! know I would love to interview her and get to know her and add to her music profile, in the meantime please check out the album and what I loved about it.
Gap Year is a great first project! It was like reading a 90’s yearbook. The first song begins with what sounds like an open mic night but because of the album cover, it makes me think of a school's Talent Show, it's a beautiful introduction to Laila! the artist. Another thing I love about this album are the cute familial interludes. I truly miss the use of interludes in albums so it's refreshing to see the new generation of artists take it back to the basics.
Some of my favorite songs on the album are ‘If U Don’t Know By Now’, ‘Like That’, ‘Could Be’ and ‘Flyer Than U’.
'If U Don’t Know By Now' gives all the old school vibes you need for the day, it's a song you'll end up replaying over and over again.
'Like That' is such a bop because Laila! completely switches up her style for this one. You'll quickly find yourself dancing along and you can’t help but love the catchy hook!
'Could Be’ is just a beautiful song and reminds me of early Aaliyah.
‘Flyer Than You’ is my favorite song on the album. The second to last song on the album, it's a perfect ending to not only a great project but I can just imagine this song being played at the end of a very awesome school year.
A really great solid project, 17 songs and I genuinely loved all 17! Definitely check out this project when you get a chance, links below:
