KEHLANI: 'AFTER HOURS'

Updated: Aug 15

What's Good Ya'll!!! I have been a Kehlani fan for quite some time now. I can't remember when I came across her music (timeframe wise) I just remember the song was 'The Way' Ft. Chance The Rapper, and it was something about the beat and lyrics that just had me in a chokehold. Now, can we be real friends? Kehlani isn't like this artist you are checking for because of the vocals ok? Now that's not to say sis can't hold a tune, I'm just saying she's really more of an unexplainable vibe honestly. Kehlani is an American singer and song writer from Oakland, Ca. In 2011, they achieved initial fame as a member of girl pop group called, Poplyfe, however, it wouldn't be until 2014 when things would start to take off for Kehlani. With three albums under their belt, the latest called Blue Water Road, released in 2022, it's been awhile since we had a Kehlani album and it looks like with the release of this single we may be getting one very soon.

Here's the thing, I know I came off sounding kind of shady at first but there was truly no shade because I'm a huge fan. I've listened to all of her albums, including her mixtape and Kehlani is one of those artists that is very consistent, in my opinion she doesn't have a bad album. She's also a very relatable artist. It was her 2017 release of SweetSexySavage that made me a forever fan. The album touched on so many topics from disappointment in life and people, to love and growth of self, healing past traumas. What I love about Kehlani is how much she tends to put herself in her music. Every album has shown growth regarding her artistry and 'After Hours' is another testament to that. As we all know afrobeats is taking over the world and this song gives that vibe. This song is just a good time and fun it makes you want to dance and how could it not when you hear the samples of Cordel “Scatta” Burrell’s classic, “Coolie Dance Rhythm,” which was famously heard in Move Ya body' by Nina Sky.

Listen I could talk about Kehlani for days honestly because I do think they are one of those underrated R&B artists that has made it. But they are really inspiring from the music to their journey of where they are now. I would honestly love to sit down and interview Kehlani, I think in many instances we haven't really gotten to know them. Anyway, check out Kehlani's latest single 'After Hours' and you can keep with the release of the upcoming album via Kehlani's IG: https://www.instagram.com/kehlani/?hl=en
