Nkiru Books Returns to the Spotlight With Talib Kweli, Wiki and a Celebration of Brooklyn’s Hip Hop Legacy

Brooklyn’s cultural history has never been confined to recording studios or concert stages. Some of its most important movements began in bookstores, community spaces and neighborhood gathering places where ideas were exchanged long before they reached a microphone.
On November 1, 2026, that history takes center stage as Nkiru Books returns with a special showcase at Café Erzulie in Brooklyn, bringing together literature, lyricism and artists connected to Hip Hop’s independent spirit.
The evening will feature Talib Kweli as DJ, special guest Wiki and live performances from Hrlum, David Jame$, Diani and other participating artists. The event is curated by Diani.
More Than a Bookstore
Founded in 1976 by Leothy Miller Owens, Nkiru Books became a vital space for African American literature, intellectual exchange and cultural expression in Brooklyn.
Its significance expanded during the 1990s when Hip Hop artists Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, became closely connected to the bookstore. The duo later purchased the bookstore in 2000, carrying forward its legacy.
That connection matters because Hip Hop’s history is not solely a history of records. It is also a history of independent institutions that made room for artists, thinkers and communities to exchange ideas.
A Celebration of Literature and Lyricism
With Talib Kweli behind the turntables and performances from artists representing different corners of independent Hip Hop, the showcase brings together music and literature in a setting designed for cultural exchange.
The announced lineup also includes A.L. Skills, Punchline, Jessica Care Moore and Rasheed Chappell, alongside special guest Wiki.
Rather than treating books and music as separate cultural experiences, the evening recognizes the relationship between storytelling on the page and storytelling through rhythm and rhyme.
Preserving Brooklyn’s Cultural Institutions
As neighborhoods evolve and independent cultural spaces face increasing pressures, preserving institutions like Nkiru Books becomes especially meaningful.
The bookstore’s history represents a period when physical gathering places played a central role in building artistic communities. Those spaces helped create relationships, encourage experimentation and connect emerging voices with established cultural figures.
For Brooklyn, the return of Nkiru Books is more than a nostalgic moment. It is a reminder that the foundations of Hip Hop culture extend far beyond the music itself.
