What’s Good Y’all! For this review, I wanted to highlight an up-and-coming/newer artist who has been doing her thing since 2024. Releasing her debut album ‘Don’t Come Home.’ Pimmie is the latest artist from the OVO camp looking to make her mark within the industry.

My issue with the project and the artists is, can she really stand apart under OVO? Can anyone, for that matter? Since the mid-2000’s, we have been able to recognize the infamous OVO sound. Artists like Popcaan, PartyNextDoor, Drake, DVSN, Majid Jordan, etc. have all given us a sound we can easily recognize before the lyrics even begin on the track.

Having a recognizable sound for our label and the artist on that label isn’t necessarily an issue; however, it's hard to really gauge the growth of our artists when they stay within the same range all the time.

I really wanted to love 'Don’t Come Home’ I listened to it a few times to make sure I wasn’t the problem. And then I thought maybe I would like her older work...

So I went back to 2024 to check out her ‘Bittersweet EP’. And while I like the sound being more acoustic and that new-age R&B/Soul feel, minus the OVO Sound. I still felt like she was trying too hard to sound like and give us music that was similar to what we already have.

While I enjoyed the sound of the 'Bittersweet EP' a little more, it was the structure of the album for ‘Don’t Come Home’ that showed promise and growth. There was a theme here, focused on the roller coaster ride that relationships can sometimes become. I loved the titles of each song and how they quickly showcase the five stages of grief.

The album is only 18 minutes long, and each song sounds like the same song continuously for 10 tracks, but hey, maybe I’m leaving this style of music behind in my 20’s. Maybe certain new artists just aren’t for me, and MAYBE the OVO sound has finally run its course with me. I wish I could say there was one song I loved or something that stood out, but I could barely understand the lyrics, and I was just thinking, 'this was the longest 18 minutes of my life.' TWICE.

It’s not that I don’t think Pimmie has what it takes to really establish herself as a new artist. I just think maybe signing with OVO is a gamble...unless you enjoy being the baby of the family and constantly sounding like everybody else. I would love to say that I’m eager to hear more, but I’m not. I am, however, eager to hear something DIFFERENT. I’m hoping in the future Pimmie can really find her style and voice, cus that ain't really it.

Don’t let my hateration stop you in this dancery, by all means, check out the album for yourself and be sure to let me know your thoughts!
