What's Good Y'all! Today I was in an Alternative R&B mood. Have you ever listened to Baby Rose? I was introduced to her by someone who doesn't deserve the credit so I'll refrain lol, but nonetheless, since 2018 Baby Rose has been on my radar. Her voice, earthy and voluminous. Sometimes I close my eyes and think of myself in 'IdleWild' or 'The Cotton Club' from back in the day, with Baby Rose as the entertainment, with a live band. Channeling artists from a time that was before us, such as, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. Vocally entrancing the room with every note and the room just aimlessly melts away as we dance the night away. Now that the stage is set, let me introduce you to the Baby Rose!
Born in Washington DC but growing up in Fayetteville, NC, at the age of nine the talent Baby Rose possessed was immediately spotted by her family. Honing in on her abilities at the age of 12, she began recording in the studio. However, it would not be until the age of 23 in 2017, with the release of her 'Dusk Til Dawn' mixtape, that she would finally garner the nods of approval from established industry peers.
Now on her 4th studio project, 'Slow Burn', collaborating with the band BADBADNOTGOOD, Baby Rose delivers a six song EP, that captivativates for 23 mins and 32 seconds. I know we complain about short projects a lot these days, but I dig them. I feel like if you can capture enough of what you are trying to create within your art, you don't have to overload your audience with a bunch a tracks. Especially when all the tracks sound the same. Thankfully, that is not the case here. The album hits you with 'On my mind', as the collab between BBNG and Baby Rose melts like butter on the track. 'Slow Burn', my favorite track on the album, makes you want to slow dance to this jukebox tune. The way Baby Rose performs slow burn makes you want to play it on repeat. 'Caroline' feat. Mereba is a cute jazzy vibe that makes me want to bake or clean haha or maybe drive to the shore and listen to the waves.
'Weakness' gives a little more of a rock vibe, I get hint of Tina Turner with this song. I just wish I could have been in the studio session for 'It's Alright' its another favorite of mine on the album. Baby Rose and BBNG went off on this track, the production, the vocals, it's all just so crazy good and I wish the song was longer. 'One last Dance' is a beautiful ending number to this short travel through time. It makes you reminiscent of the days when people would actually slow dance and hold each other close on the dance floor lovingly. It's truly a beautiful song.
As Haitians would say, Se Sa, that's that really lol the album or 'EP is very short and sweet but I highly recommend if you have never listened to Baby Rose.
