What’s good y'all?!
I am so excited to introduce whoever has not yet been introduced to this next artist. Since 2021 I have been a fan of Canadian R&B artist, Dylan Synclair. However, Synclair has been doing his thing since 2017. Raised in the church where his voice was able to be fine-tuned, he began writing at 15 and released his first single ‘Twelve’ on October 6, 2017. In 2018, he released his first EP Red Like Crimson. And in 2019 he dropped a single ‘Just Anybody’. It wouldn’t be until the release of his first album in 2020, ‘Proverb’, in which he would catch my attention. 'Proverb' was healing my soul during this time. While the world was still reeling from the effects of the Pandemic, great music was being released and this was one of those albums. Songs like ‘Home’, ‘All I Need’ and ‘Intermission (Get Away)’ just did something to my spirit. But this isn’t about 'Proverb', 'For The Boy In Me' is Sinclair’s third studio album and I just wanna know if y'all tapped in yet?
Just like his second album, ‘No Longer in the Suburbs’, I had to run ‘For The Boy In Me’ back a few times for it to stick. I’ve had to do this alot of new Alternative R&B artists, and that is in no way a diss to their artistry and style. I actually love it and applaud it, it forces me to listen to an album again and hear all the little intricacies I may have missed the first, second and third time.
Initially the songs I thought I disliked I really love and my favorite thing about the album is the smooth transition from one song to the next. The album is 12 tracks but it is only 35 mins so by the time it's over you are yearning for a little more.
‘Sweet Life’ is the intro to the album as Dylan highlights that he feels like he’s made it somewhat but he’s still got a ways to go and much to prove. ‘Crew > Boo’ is a jazzy bop, Once you get the hook it's a song you instantly fall in love with. I love ‘*Sigh*’ and ‘IMY’ mainly because of how it's sung by Dylan, I think both songs are executed beautifully; ‘*Sigh*’ is a little more of an uptempo slow bop and the fade out of the song into ‘I Lo<3 My Ex' is my favorite! ‘IMY’ is a beautifully sung ballad because I think most of us have been here, missing someone we once loved. ‘Golden’ was a song that didn’t disappoint because it was reminiscent of the vibes from Proverb. This isn't a gospel album or artists but you can feel the Spirit all up and through ‘Golden’. It’s my favorite song on the album, it just warms my spirit everytime I listen to it.
I saw Dylan Synclair live in Brooklyn a year ago and had an amazing time. I went by myself and I even made some friends. He sounded exactly like his album and although he wants to sell out world tours, I love the level he is at, those intimate small shows are unmatched energy you don't always get to experience at sold out arenas. His music is so transcending so I can see that goal for him. Whatever you do you should really hop on board now while the fire is just getting started because the future is certainly bright as he is a rising artist to watch.
