What’s Good Y’all! I have been waiting for another Kirby album since her last release in 2021. While Kirby has released projects, such as the ‘Swarm - EP’ and singles since then, I was waiting for another album that would give me the soulful vibes I got from 'Sis. He Wasn’t the One.'

With this project, Kirby returns home to Southaven, Mississippi, drawing inspiration from her roots and infusing sounds such as R&B, Funk, Country, Gospel, Blues, and Hip-Hop. What I love about this project is that it reverts to the blueprint of what makes art, art...political. Kirby takes a step back from discussing topics solely about love and relationships and dips her toe into topics discussing reparations, white supremacy, black pride, and more. The album is a mix of various topics, for Instance, 'Thick N Country' ft. Akeem Ali is a fun and funky song showcasing love and highlighting the beauty of Mississippi culture and women. ‘Jump the Broom’ is a beautiful black tribute to a culturally significant ritual our people used to perform at weddings. And 'Afromations' is a great ending to affirm the things that are true within us.
Historically, since our beginnings in this country, our music has always had meaning, feeling, told a story, and been political. In ‘Miss Black America', Kirby perfectly outlines America’s problem with blackness and how it has always treated us. Featuring Big K.R.I.T., this single isn’t just a PSA about what goes on here but also a declaration that we've been hip but that ain’t stop our ancestors and it won’t stop us.
A few of my favorite tracks consist of Kirby flexing her vocal skills on tracks like ‘Under Pressure’ and ‘Mama Don’t Worry’. Using her raspy but soulful vocals, she gives me all the vibes of Macy Gray mixed with Tina Turner.
Some artists' work really speaks for itself, and if you have yet to listen to Kirby, I URGE you to tap in today. Check out her latest project here:
