What’s good y'all?
It has been 7 years exactly since I last listened to a full Nelly Furtado album, coincidentally , this is her 7th studio album in 5 years. And I don’t know why I stopped checking for Nelly Furtado, I don’t have a good reason, especially as I listen to the new album and remember just how much I really loved her first album, 'Whoa Nelly!'
When it comes to the industry whether it’s music, movies or whatever, if you aren’t currently in the spotlight and always the topic of conversation it can seem like you can be forgotten and thrown to the wayside as people hype up the next big thing. After the release of “Promiscuous’ featuring timbaland, I feel like that’s what happened with Furtado. 2006 was a tough time to be an artist because of how saturated the market was with talent, and during this time we were heavily pitting women against each other as if there wasn’t room for everyone at the type. As Rihanna, Cassie, Danity Kane and then some came through it was easy to lose track of a lot of great artists you fell in love with somehow. And while I do feel like the market is still focused on a particular few at the time, what I love now is how more easily accessible music has become for you to circle back to the sounds, albums and artists you love.
7 is a perfect comeback album, if you want to call this a comeback that is. I truly forgot how much I love Nelly Furtado. One thing I have always loved about Nelly Furtado is her experimentation with various genres. While listening to Furtado you never know what mood you are going to get, it can be hip hop, r&b, dance, the list is endless. While I need to go back and listen to the last 5 albums, I do love the growth and difference from her very first album to this one. Nelly Furtado was in her early twenties when her first album was released, and while she was way ahead of her time even then, now at 45 you can hear the grown woman she has become.
Some of my favorite songs on the album consist of; ‘Showstopper’, it's the first song on the album and it's the perfect introduction to remind you why Nelly Furtado is that girl! The song makes me want to get up and dance the night away. The dancing doesn’t stop as Furtado incorporates her Portuguese roots to the second song on the album ‘Corazón’ ft. Bomba Estéreo.
‘Better or Worse’ featuring Gray Hawken is more of an R&B bop that I fell in love with as well as ‘Crown’ featuring Blxckie. ‘Better or Worse’ is a beautiful reflection of what seems like a love gone wrong and ‘Crown’ reminds me of a Rae Sremmurd bop. ‘All Comes Back’ is a beautiful slower tune ft. Charlotte Day Wilson. Charlotte Day Wilson is a new artist I have really enjoyed lately so I was excited to see her featured on the album. And last but not least, ‘Better Than Ever’ is a beautiful moving on from a love lost track that touches the soul.
The plan is to go back, because I really need to dig through the evolution of Nelly Furtado, however, in the meantime, be sure to check out her latest album '7', links below:
