PR Tips Every Music Artist Should Know

One thing I always tell artists is that great music is only half the job. If people can’t easily learn about you, find your music, or understand your brand, you’re making it harder for opportunities to reach you. Public relations is about positioning yourself professionally so media, fans, and industry partners can quickly see who you are and what you bring to the table.

Here are a few key PR tips every artist should keep in mind while building their career.

Why Every Artist Needs an EPK

An Electronic Press Kit (EPK) is one of the most important tools you can have as an artist. Think of it as your professional introduction to the industry. When a journalist, blogger, event curator, or brand wants to learn more about you, your EPK should answer all their questions in one place.

A strong EPK usually includes your bio, professional photos, music links, notable achievements, and press coverage. Instead of sending five different links or long explanations, you can simply share your EPK and let your work speak for itself. It shows that you take your career seriously and makes it easier for media outlets and partners to feature you.

The Importance of a Strong Bio

Your artist bio tells your story. It’s the piece that gives people context around your music, your background, and your creative vision.

A good bio shouldn’t just list accomplishments. It should explain who you are, what inspires your sound, and what makes you different from other artists. Journalists often pull directly from bios when writing articles, so keeping yours updated and well written can make a huge difference in how you’re presented in the media.

Make Your Music Easy to Find

One of the biggest mistakes artists make is burying their music links. If someone visits your Instagram or TikTok, they should be able to find your music immediately.

Use your bio link strategically. Whether it’s a streaming link, a smart link, or a landing page, make sure fans and industry professionals can quickly access your latest releases. The easier it is to listen to your music, the more likely people are to actually press play.

Keep Your Social Media Bio Updated

Your social media bio is basically your digital business card. In a few seconds, someone should be able to understand who you are and what you do.

Make sure it clearly states that you’re an artist, includes a link to your music, and highlights anything important like a new release, tour dates, or press features. A clean, updated bio shows professionalism and helps new followers instantly connect with your work.

Invest in Professional Photos

Professional photos are a must when it comes to press and media opportunities. When blogs, playlists, or publications feature you, they need high-quality images to include in their articles.

Photos should represent your brand and the aesthetic of your music. They don’t always need to be overly complicated, but they should look polished and intentional.

It’s also important to think about how these photos will be used publicly. Images with your middle finger up or holding drinks can sometimes limit opportunities with certain media outlets or brand partnerships. Keeping a few clean, professional options in your press kit gives you more flexibility when pitching.

Develop a Brand Around Your Image and Music

Your brand is more than just your logo or cover art. It’s the overall feeling people get when they experience your music and visuals.

From your photos to your social media content to the way you interact with fans, everything contributes to how your audience sees you. Developing a strong brand helps you build a deeper connection with your following and makes you more memorable in a crowded industry.

Don’t Be Afraid to Invest in Your Career

Building a music career requires investment. Whether it’s studio time, marketing, photoshoots, or PR support, putting resources into your craft shows that you believe in your work.

Artists who take their careers seriously understand that growth doesn’t happen overnight. Strategic investments in your music and brand can open doors to bigger opportunities, stronger fan engagement, and long-term success.

At the end of the day, PR is about making sure the world can easily discover and understand your artistry. When your materials are organized, your brand is clear, and your music is accessible, you create more opportunities for your work to reach the right people.

Consistency, professionalism, and intention go a long way in the music industry. And sometimes, the smallest details — like a clean bio or an updated link — can make the biggest difference.
