ALBUM REVIEW: 'P.O.V' TONE STITH

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

What's good ya'll! Spooky season has sadly come to an end, but that's ok because I am excited to share my second favorite genre in entertainment, R&B!!!

The "R&B is dead"conversation is so TIRED and seeing that ya'll act like you can only listen to artists on the radio, I'mma put you on and first on the list is Tone Stith. Now if you aren't dependent on the machine feeding you your musical needs then you probably know who Tone is. While Tone has been making music since 2011, I didn't find any of his work until 2021 with his album 'Still FWM.' However, it wasn't until this album, 'P.O.V.', that I decided to look into him further; discovering that Tone really began his career as a writer for artists like Chris Brown. When you listen to Tone Stith, you hear a hint of Chris Brown but you can tell his influences are also a wide range of old and new school artists, especially with his latest album 'P.O.V.'

R&B/Soul 'P.O.V' Artist: Tone Stith Release date: September 8, 2023

'P.O.V.' is without a doubt one of my favorite albums this year. With only seven tracks Tone delivers songs you can dance, sing, make love to, relate to and hell cry if you really in that space lol. The album doesn't have any features unlike past projects and to be honest, they aren't needed for this project. While I like his last album, 'Still FWM', 'P.O.V' allowed me to really see Tone Stith for the artist he is. So often we want to compare and contrast our artists, especially our Black artists and I hate that we do that, this album really shows that Tone Stith is here and he's not like anyone else.

Let's start with the first track on 'P.O.V', 'Smoking In The Park (Paradise)', having a great first song to start your album off is tough, but so achievable. Tone opens us up with a smooth, jazzy melody that makes you literally want to spark a blunt and go smoke in the park. While your vibing out the song then transitions into his single 'Girls Like You' (my favorite song on the album) its slightly upbeat but because it maintains its jazz origins it truly moves you. Even if you aren't in a space of heartbreak you instantly start relating and saying "forget these hoes" LOL. Now you don't reminisce over heartache long as you transition to track 3 'I Need You' between the bass and the vocals, it's a BOP, like add it to the bathtub playlist ok!! Now when you're finally out of the tub with a glass of wine in hand and getting ready to moisturize, here comes track 4, 'Reposado (Last Call)'. I realized this was another favorite song of mine on the album when I was just walking around one morning singing "oooooh I might be faded." lol The hook alone is catchy af and hard to get out of your head so much so that you have to play it at least once just to let it go lol and that's ok because it such a BOP!! With track 5 you are are given somewhat a throwback sound, it gives me major old school R&B vibes with a mix of new school. Just like 'Girls Like You', 'Whoa' gives you more of an upbeat tempo that makes you wanna grab whoever you lovin' on and just vibe out. Now track 6 ('Stamina') and 7 ('Lonely') slows the album down and brings it to a close. 'Stamina' is such a smooth track and then the outro smoothly leads us into 'Lonely' which gives me major Babyface or Usher vibes. Tone truly showcases his vocal range with the last track which made it the perfect ending to such a dope album.

At the end of the year Apple Music is going to show me what I played to death and 'P.O.V.' will be in that playlist. If you love R&B you will love this album and in the words of Ms. Monét, "I put that on my momma, I put that on my hood." OK!!
