Jawan Gives OutKast's “So Fresh, So Clean” an R&B Love Story on “Fresher Than Us”

Some records are so recognizable that the opening notes alone can send you straight back to a different era. Jawan knows that feeling, and he is using it to introduce his next chapter with “Fresher Than Us.”

The singer, previously known as Jawan Harris, released the single through Epic Records on October 16. Produced by Mel & Mus, the song draws from OutKast's “So Fresh, So Clean,” turning the familiar hip-hop reference into a celebration of a new romantic connection. Instead of trying to recreate the original, Jawan uses that musical memory as the backdrop for his own R&B moment.

In an interview with Rated R&B, Jawan explained that the song was inspired by the excitement of meeting someone and feeling an unmistakable connection. The release also comes with an official music video. Earlier this year, he released a rendition of SWV's “Always On My Mind,” another reminder of the classic R&B influences shaping his current sound.

There's a fine line between honoring a classic and leaning on nostalgia to do all the work. Jawan's latest release gives listeners a chance to decide whether the new-school love story earns its familiar foundation. Either way, it's a name worth keeping on the emerging R&B radar.
