What’s Good Y’all!!! There is a new artist I have been dying to put y’all on to! First generation Nigerian-American R&B artists Lekan has just released his very first album following up some of his released singles from 2023 such as, ‘Familiar’ and his debut EP ‘So You Know’, released in 2024.

What I love about his first project is that it follows the template of 90’s R&B to a T!

'For All The Right Reasons, Vol. 1' starts off with the smooth and soulful, as Lekan flexes on the song Balance, delivering varying layers of where his voice can go. At the end of the song, you get a small interlude from his Pops.

You are then swept away to an afrobeats tune that makes you want to move your hips and dip in all the right ways to ‘What They Want?’ But pay attention, if you get too caught up in the beat and the vibe, you may miss the message as Lekan flexes his Yoruba on the track.

Come Thru' is my favorite song on the album. I’m not sure if it’s the beat, the lyrics, or the feeling that I’m listening to something that reminds me of the videos I would watch on VH1 Soul when I would get ready for school in the morning. When I first heard it, I kept it on repeat, eager to tell all my R&B heads about it. I think my biggest complaint about this track, or album rather,  is just how short it is. I understand the age we live in. But for the love of God, GIVE ME A TEN-HOUR LONG R&B ALBUM lol jk, an hour will do just fine.

Now, when I said Lekan followed the 90’s R&B template, I was not only referring to the sound, but also to the interludes that include not only his Pops but also his Uncle. I love a good interlude. I didn’t realize how much I love them and miss them. In many ways, I feel like an interlude offers a glimpse into the artist's life, giving you a sense of their personality. Lastly, Lekan did something that R&B albums stopped including for some reason. ONE spiritual song, 'Worship (Psalm 103)'…Towards the end or at the end of the album, many artists/groups would add one song dedicated to God, highlighting their faith in The Most High and giving thanks/blessings. From Destiny’s Child to Missy Elliot, Ashanti, and Brandy, just to name a few. If you go back through some of their older albums, you will hear songs of worship, and I miss those days. I felt like that’s how you knew the album was going to be fire, and I love a good worship song.

Listen, I could go on and on about this album. This was his very first project, and although it was short, titling it Vol 1 leads me to believe there will be an extended edition to follow, possibly Vol 2? It’s just an inference. In the meantime, you can hop on the Lekan train, check out the album, and come back here and let me know what you think!
